December 28, 2014 "PRAISE, PLATITUDES OR PROPHECY"

AN AFFIRMATION OF FAITH FOR ALL SEASONS
We believe in God, the creator of all things, the giver of life and breath.
We believe in Jesus Christ, born Emmanuel, God with us, baptized and revealed the beloved Son of God.
He sought to heal humanity by taking our brokenness upon himself, suffering for us and dying for all our sakes.
God raised Jesus from the dead and in so doing, made it clear to all the world that God can and will make all things new.
We believe in the gift of the Holy Spirit, continually poured forth from God to refresh our souls.
It is the Holy Spirit who leads us into a new day, renewing our faith, transforming us in mission and revitalizing the church.
The Holy Spirit is our soul companion, the counselor of truth who reminds us of God’s ever-presence, and God’s promise of eternal life.
All thanks and praise to God! Amen.
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Glorious God, how very grateful we are for the opportunities the Christmas season offers to each and every one of us. We seem to change our perspective about a lot of things. Perhaps because we are looking around at colorful lights, eyeing lavish decorations that we notice things not noticed before. Are there actually more smiling faces in the madding crowd this year than last year? Dearest LORD, every year someone says they wish the feeling of Christmas would last the whole year through. Help us understand that the music of the spheres is all around us everyday, and choirs of angels would be very rusty if they only sang on Christmas Eve. There is not end to your LOVE. We carry your gift of the Christ child with us. Our hearts are warmed by his presence and our hopes and dreams brightened by his light. The smile of knowing can be worn on our faces all the year round, for we are a new creation, born the children of light in him. We give you thanks in Christ’s name. Amen.
THE OFFERING INVITATION
The gift giving frenzy is winding down for this year. Was their a favorite gift you gave to someone or received from someone this year? I received gifts that made me chuckle, gifts that warmed my heart and my innards, and gifts that brought an oh-so-grateful-tear of nostalgic remembrance to my eye. Did you ever think how each gift you receive holds within it the presence and essence of the giver. When I hold a gift or look at it, or use it or wear it, I see the face of the giver and smile. In the give of the Christ child is the presence and essence of the giver, who longs for everyone alive to receive him. Even better we can share the gift of the Christ anytime.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God, these gifts are an act of worship as important as praying, singing and attending to your word. Ever seeking to discern your will and way for us, our hearts are full as we labor side by side with our brother and sister Christians. As you have entrusted us with much, we respond in kind, lending our hearts and hands to heal a broken and hurting world. Help us build ministries that glorify your name, empowering us to serve wholeheartedly in Christ’s name. Amen.

December 24, 2014 "WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH THE BABY?"

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER AND LORD’S PRAYER
Glorious God, this is a night we look forward to the year round. The lights of welcome shine in our streets and our sanctuaries beckoning to you, proclaiming our sincere adoration, praise and thanksgiving for all your wondrous deeds. Here is where the hustle and bustle of the days leading up to this night come to an end. We fix our hearts and minds upon the Christ child. We confess our need to be reminded, why we have given special significance to this season. The colorful lights that adorn our homes both inside and out symbolize the light that was coming into the world. They beckon to you announcing that we are ready to be your children of light, to receive into our hearts the Wonderful Counselor, the Prince of Peace, our Emmanuel. In this sanctuary we are reminded that it is the birth of our savior and Lord Jesus that calls us to declare this season holy. Let us linger here washed in the light of your love, resting in yet another of your promises fulfilled. We thank you, O God for this precious gift, of yourself, come down to earth, love lying in swaddled in a bed of straw. We are humbled by your willing vulnerability and innocence. Tonight, Dearest Abba Father, in heaven, we hallow your name offering our thanks and praise. May your kingdom come and your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. We ask no more than our daily bread and that you forgive our faults and trespasses, empowering us to forgive the faults and trespasses of others. Let us not be overcome by the temptations of the world, and deliver us from evil; for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
PREPARING OUR GIFTS
As God has given us the gift of the Christ Child, so too we honor God, offering our gifts so that people throughout the earth will have the opportunity to hear what we have heard, to know what we have come to know and receive the blessings and assurances we have received.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Wondrous God, giver of the greatest gift of all; bless the gifts we have brought to your service. May they help to transform lives and brighten the hearts of all the people we seek to serve throughout the world. In the name of the Christ we pray. Amen.

December 21, 2014 CHOIR CANTATA "LOVE CAME DOWN" by Joel Raney

AFFIRMATION FOR ADVENT
We believe in God, the giver of life and grace, whose wondrous acts of mercy
and love offer eternal hope in a troubled and hurting world.
We believe that Jesus came to us as God’s love, God’s hope and God’s gift to humankind.
Jesus is present among us still and always, because he lives in our hearts.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, who whispers words of hope, peace, joy and love to ALL.
We believe in Christ’s church, the living body of Christ in the world, to which we belong.
We believe that we are called to minister to God’s people in Jesus’ name and for his sake,
today and tomorrow as this is, once again, the beginning. Amen.
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Loving and Merciful God, fill us this morning with the brightness of your presence, that we may reflect the true light of your being. Protect us in our travels wherever we are headed, whether we are driving, flying, biking or walking to visit with those dear to us, or just to see the sights of your wondrous creation. We confess that most of us are looking forward to our journeys in the days ahead. But as we go, remind us, O LORD, of the long, arduous journey of Joseph and Mary who traveled, not for pleasure. Help us remember that they were obliged to make their way to Bethlehem for the express purpose of being counted in the Roman Emperor’s tax census. Let us be humbled by the determination of Mary and Joseph, to do the will of God and endure the law of the land. There was no bitterness, resentment, or frustration when the time came for Mary to give birth. We pray that you will give us hearts like Mary’s to do and be your servants in this world. All this we pray in the name of the Christ child, born for us and for all. Amen.
THE OFFERING INVITATION
There is a feeling in the air this year. Folks are embracing a spirit of goodwill. They are once again joining in, paying it forward and participating in random acts of kindness. At least two friends have reported that when they arrived at the drive up window of their favorite fast food restaurant the cashier reported that their meal had already been paid for by the person in line just ahead of them. In turn, they bought the meal of the person in the cue behind them. According to the cashier it had been going on all day. A few years ago I took a photo of a lone red Christmas bulb hanging on the limb of a denuded (that’s winter-naked) tree outside the Starbucks in my neighborhood. By the second week of December I noted that no Christmas bulb appeared on the pitiful little tree by the drive-up window, so I decided to bring a decoration from home and place it on the tree. One or two people saw me. Last Monday when I went for coffee there were three more Christmas bulbs on the tree keeping my bulb company. We could say that the Christ child was God’s random act of kindness. Let him be born in us anew today.

December 14, 2014 "WHO CAN TESTIFY TO THE LIGHT?"

We believe in the Holy Spirit, who whispers words of hope, peace, joy and love to ALL.

today and tomorrow as this is, once again, the beginning. Amen.
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Gracious God of ALL, Wondrous Sovereign of the Universe, Giver of light, life and joy, when we come into your sanctuary we are gladdened as we feel the thrill of your presence. We are strangely warmed by the welcoming voice of an usher, the embrace of friend, or the eager smile as somebody who makes room for us in the pew right next to them. Dearest Lord, we confess that in this troubled world, when confronted every minute by crisis oriented news, we are comforted by the gaudy trappings of the holiday season. When we look at the bright and twinkling lights and the gentle flicker of the Advent candles, we trade in the angst for nostalgia. We are thankful as we take a moment to linger near the smell of pine on a real wreath. We chuckle as we recall bright red pajamas with feet, divinity, ribbon candy, fudge, and kindness that seems to overflow from everyone everywhere. We indulge ourselves singing our favorite carols at the top of our voice while driving. We thank you, gracious God, for memorable moments that restore not only our trust in you, but our trust in each other. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
THE OFFERING INVITATION
I don’t know about you, but I have a tendency to buy gifts all year round. I see something and say to myself, “so and so would really like that; I will buy it now and give it to him or her for Christmas or their birthday.” When the birthday or Christmas comes around, I have forgotten about the gift that I knew, So and So, or What’s His Name, or Fulana de Tal, would treasure. Inevitably I find them in a bag or a box in that special spot, in my guest room closet, obviously reserved for future gifts. I guess what I need to learn is not to save gifts for future giving, reserving them for the right season or the right occasion. If someone is on my mind and in my heart, perhaps the gift ought to be given in the moment with no special occasion in mind. God’s gifts to humanity were never designated for a special time or season. They were given to us because God was had us in mind, and hoped we would treasure the gift in the moment and always. We are the ones who gave God’s occasion its special significance.

AFFIRMATION FOR ADVENT

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Wondrous and Merciful God, as we ponder your presence with us this morning, we dare to ask that you imbue us with a spirit of peace. We confess that this week has been one of some frustration with traffic tie ups and roads closed because of the rains, along with untimely road repairs. For many who are out and about driving their cars in the wet and rain road rage became a reality on this side of the mountain. Because getting from one place to the next has taken 3 times longer than usual, with greater effort than expected, tempers are short. Some of us were even tempted to lean on our car horns throwing caution and common sense to the wind. Give us patience, gracious LORD, while we wait . Cause us to consider those whose plight is to stand, sit, lie down, and sleep in the rain, wet and cold. Let us not become inured to the needs of those all around us; let us hold each other in prayer while we are waiting. In the name of the Christ we pray. Amen.
THE OFFERING INVITATION
One of the most beautiful Tenor Arias in Handel’s Messiah and in my opinion one of the most beautiful ever written. It is based on the Isaiah 40 passage: Comfort Ye, My People. It begins as a loving lilting lullaby, the soothing voice of God as if holding a tiny infant close in his arms, invites us to be comforted. As the aria progresses its as if God’s voice cannot contain the excitement of what he has to say to his people and the aria morphs into a triumphant almost jolly piece as the tenor sings, “Every Valley, Every Valley shall be exalted (lifted up) and every moment and hill made low. The crooked will be made straight and the rough places a plain. It is God promising that the path his people must walk in this life, they will not walk alone. The Glory of the Lord is about to be revealed. Surely it is here in this place that we embrace the comfort God promises and gives.

November 30, 2014 FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT "WHAT DO YOU EXPECT"

AFFIRMATION FOR ADVENT
We believe in God, the giver of life and grace, whose wondrous acts of mercy
and love offer eternal hope in a troubled and hurting world.
We believe that Jesus came to us as God’s love, God’s hope and God’s gift to humankind.
His presence among us is still and always, because he lives in our hearts.
Eternal and Merciful God, hear our prayer. Humanity cries out for relief from the madness born of fear and enmity. Lead us in the ways of righteousness and tolerance, seeking to embrace justice and fairness. All too often we depend upon threat and restraint, or withholding as a means of managing our relationships. Like foolish buggy drivers, we believe that if we hold the reins tight enough, the horses at the other end of the tether will never bolt and run away. In our fever to be in control of everything, we are often mislead by machines that are imperfect, and we can fall prey to innuendo and rumor. Our children bow their heads, but not in prayer. Rather we are all bowing our heads to read and text, often oblivious to those around us. We no longer talk to each other face to face, but sideways, our eyes fixed on a screen. In this Advent season, empower each one of us to be engaging messengers of hope. Inspire us to meet the eyes of the stranger behind us, and offer them the greetings of the season. Let us be their Good News Hope, in the name of the Christ we pray. Amen.
THE OFFERING INVITATION
Advent comes from the Latin ad + venire meaning, to arrive, to come to, but it refers to the coming of something really, really big; something momentous — something the world has been waiting for. Some of us have witnessed the advent of cars with automatic transmissions, dial-up and push button phones used on a private line, not a party line, and televisions. We have witnessed the advent of the computer from ENIAC to PCs and Macs, the bulky cell phone to the awesome smart phone. We have witnessed the division of the Atom, and along with that advent of Atomic bombs, nuclear submarines, ICBMs and Drones. Invenire, which means to come upon, to devise, or discover is a more appropriate term for these human inventions. I personally will keep the word Advent linked to the God’s promise and the momentous arrival of the Christ child.
Amen.

November 23, 2014 "STANDING BEFORE THE THRONE" CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Wondrous and Loving God, we come before you this day offering our thanks for your persistent pursuit of the human heart, and your determination to lead us in lives full of grace and hope. We confess that, when we are out there in the world, it’s easy to lose touch with your ever-presence. When we are bogged down by anxiety over deadlines, or the expectations we place upon ourselves and others, let us rest in you and calm our jangled nerves. You will see us through. Only you are truly wise, O Lord. We know, all too well that the busy-ness of the approaching holidays can overwhelm us like a tsunami. Lead us not to run over each other planning, doing, buying, baking and wrapping in the days ahead. Rather, lead us in humming along with the music in the stores, cheering our hearts as we remember the gift that is coming to all of humankind. In his name we pray. Amen.
THE OFFERING INVITATION
How many of you have ever been in the company of royalty, Kings, Queens, Emperors, Princes, Princesses or members of the Peerage of Great Britain. It’s true some of our elected officials are considered royalty of a sort. I mean, if you shook hands with POTUS, depending upon who he or she was at the time, you might consider never washing your hand again, for fear of erasing any trace of that special electricity. It’s all chemistry and nerves, adrenaline-induced-awe. If any of us shook hands with the celebrity giants of our era we would come away with sweaty palms, or feeling faint. Being in the presence of the specially gifted and blessed, the chosen people, fills us with powerful emotions. Now I don’t want you to get a swelled head, but the next time you look in the mirror, I invite you to see the face of one who has been pursued, chosen and embraced by God! The offering YOU make to the church is a gift from a specially blessed hand.
Amen.

November 16, 2014 "WHAT'S THE RISK?"

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Wondrous and loving God, we are reminded of the risk you took with us. You created the universe, and all its wonders, then you turned it over to human beings to take of it. Not only that, you gave us the freedom of mind and heart to choose how we will invest ourselves in this creation, whether for your sake or selfish gain. We confess our failure to relish this moment in time, or to look at the big picture, fettering ourselves to challenges and troubles over which we have no control. Give us the grace to invest our spirits, our trust, our hopes, visions and talents in your service to your kingdom. Help us to embrace your promises made and kept. Let us follow the example of the Christ, abiding in him as he abides in us. He did not count his equality with you as something to be exploited, but emptied and humbled himself in obedience to you. Let us let go of all doubt, and risk humility, in Christ’s name. Amen.
THE OFFERING INVITATION
In 2009, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) redefined risk in its controversial ISO 31000, a paradigm for risk management applicable and adaptable for "any public, private or community enterprise, association, group or individual.” The controversial part of the standard is the redefinition of risk. “‘Risk’ is no longer ‘chance or probability of loss’, but ‘the effect of uncertainty on objectives’ ... thus causing the word ‘risk’ to refer to positive possibilities, as well as negative ones.” The gifts you offer the church support the line items in our general budget: salaries, office supplies, ministries, our support of the denomination at the annual and general conference levels, and our missionary. There are a number of uncertainties that can effect the church’s objectives, positively or negatively, for example: a sudden influx of new members infusing us with large donations or unplanned major repairs to the physical plant accompanied by an exodus of givers. When we launch the stewardship campaign in January, your pledge will help us manage the risk.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God, these gifts are an act of worship as important as praying, singing and attending to your word. Ever seeking to discern your will and way for us; our hearts are full as we labor side by side with our brother and sister Christians. As you have entrusted us with much, we respond in kind, lending our hearts and hands to heal a broken and hurting world. Help us build ministries that glorify your name, empowering us to serve wholeheartedly in Christ’s name. Amen.

November 9, 2014 "WISHY-WASHY OR STEADY AND READY"

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Gracious God, from everlasting to everlasting you are God, the Sovereign of the Universe who has bestowed us blessings, honor and invitation. We enter into this time of prayer opening ourselves to a moment of profound spiritual connection with you. We do not take this time of worship lightly or for granted. We do not dismiss it as Sunday routine. We understand and comprehend that hundreds or hearts are beating, hundreds of tongues speaking the same words, and each one carries burdens different from our own. We pray this day to be always prepared for your call to action in ministry. Keep us attentive, not to one another’s flaws, but to each other’s needs. Empower us to help one another, to share as we can, in the name of the Christ. Amen.
THE OFFERING INVITATION
I have taken some liberties with the expansion of the OT scripture passage. Joshua, who is trying valiantly to fill Moses’ shoes, tells the Israelites—in essence— it’s time to fish or cut bait regarding their commitment to God. You can’t hang onto and serve the gods from Egypt or beyond the river. You can’t serve the gods of your ancestors, or the gods of the Amorites, just because that happens to be where you are currently living, all the time saying, out of the other side of your mouths, that you serve Yahweh. You can’t go around trying to cover all of your divinity bases, not sure if the one who created you and rescued you from slavery is going to be the one who remains and sustains you. Three times Joshua challenges the Israelites: “Choose whom you will serve.” Their wishy-washy responses acknowledge how terrific God has been, but there is no commitment in their words until Joshua says: “You are witnesses against yourselves.” Now put your commitment where your mouth is.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God these gifts are an act of worship as important as praying, singing, and attending to your word in scripture. We believe that what Christ’s Church is able to accomplish through our gifts, glorifies your name. Ever seeking to discern your will and way for us, our hearts are full as we labor side by side with our brother and sister Christians. As you have entrusted us with much, we respond in kind, lending our hearts and hands to heal a broken and hurting world. Empower us to serve wholeheartedly in Christ’s name. Amen.

November 2, 2014 "WHAT WE WILL BE"

THE APOSTLE’S CREED REVISITED
I believe in God, the all-powerful Sovereign of the Universe, the loving Abba Father, Creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, our Lord, God’s only Son, who was conceived by The Spirit of God and born of Mary.
Jesus was condemned to death by Pontius Pilate.
He was crucified, died and was buried. On the third day God raised Jesus from the dead.
I believe the risen Christ ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand
of God Almighty.
From this throne Jesus shall come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the church universal and the communion of saints.
I believe in the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and eternal life.
Amen.
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
God of Grace and glory we are confident that even on our worst day your arms are reaching out to embrace us and lead us in the better way. Your longing is for us to rejoice in the days or our life, to celebrate the abundance of your love, grace and mercy, not wither in doubt or uncertainty about what is to come. We confess our need for assurance while we remember in love those who have crossed the threshold from this life into the next. Fill our imaginings with visions of glorious things to come and teach us how to pass our confidence on to our children. Help us exemplify our absolute trust in you. In the name of the Christ we pray. Amen.
THE OFFERING INVITATION
Did you ever wonder how All Hallows’ Eve, also called All Saints Eve, evolved into a celebration of candy? October 31st, November 1st and November 2nd are actually a triad of celebrations known in liturgical circles as the triduum of Allhallowtide (the three days of All Saints season). Each of the three days moves into and connects with the next: All Hallows, All Saints and All Souls. The triad of days is specifically dedicated to remembering those who have ended their journey of faith on earth. Sam Potaro writes: “On All Hallows’ Eve our ancestors used the most powerful weapon in the human arsenal, to confront the power of death —the power of humor and ridicule. The costumes worn and games played were all a part of humanity’s fearless derision of death. All Saints Day is the day to honor all saints known and unknown. Protestants believe that all confessing Christians will be among the saints of heaven. Today, in fact, is All Souls Day when we commemorate all the faithful departed, especially family and friends.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God, we have come to understand that offering our gifts is an act of worship just as important as praying, singing and attending to your word in scripture. We believe that what Christ’s Church is able to accomplish through the gifts we offer, glorifies your name. Ever seeking to discern your will and way for us, our hearts are full as we labor side by side with our brother and sister Christians. As you have entrusted us with much we respond in kind lending our hearts and hands to heal a broken and hurting world. Empower us to serve wholeheartedly in Christ’s name. Amen.

October 26, 2014 "HIGHER MOTIVES"

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Glorious God, Merciful Creator, just pronouncing your name gives us a sense of centeredness and purpose. We know why we are here. There is no question in our minds that we have come here to worship and honor you. In this holy place we are fully present with you. In worship we are diligent in our efforts to discover your vital and vigorous spirit at work within us. When we attend to the words of the hymns written by men and women of faith, in times of trial and rejoicing, our hearts are strangely warmed. Sharing our joys and concerns with one another connects us through time and space with those whose names we repeat and for whom we pray. We bind our hearts in these moments, confident that you hear and attend to what is important to each and every one of us. Our hearts are strangely warmed and we are made new again. Amen.
THE OFFERING INVITATION
What makes you feel good? I know some of you will answer chocolate, but seriously, what makes you feel like you have really accomplished something offering the best of yourself to help another. Deuteronomy tells us that Moses never reached the promised land. Though he could see it from the top of Mt. Nebo, just across the valley not too far away, he would never set his feet upon it. He came to the end of his days in the land of the Moabites. The 120 year old servant of the Lord had no impairment of vision or vigor, yet he died just short of the goal. I wonder if he spent any time at all focusing on what he couldn’t attain? I wonder did he mourn what couldn’t be, or did he give thanks to God for the opportunity to serve? Many of us are burdened with aches and pains, multiple medications and days filled only with doctor appointments. It may be hard for us to shift focus away from our ailments and difficulties, but I believe taking a moment to make an offering to Christ’s church can help us feel better, invested, re-invigorated — almost as good as chocolate.
October 19, 2014 "THE EXAMPLE OF ALL BELIEVERS"

CONGREGATION PRAYER
Glorious God, we are grateful for so much that sometimes we just have to share the list. We are grateful for your phenomenal grace, for it sets our hearts at liberty and our minds at rest. We are grateful for the love of Jesus that urges us onward and knows no bounds. We are grateful for, if not sometimes surprised, by the prodding companionship of the Holy Spirit. We often forget to be grateful for family and friends who remain constant and true, who willingly stand by us even when we are recalcitrant, contrary, brooding and slow. We are grateful for reliable cars, johnny-on-the-spot-locksmiths and 24-hour plumbers, resilient children, physicians who don’t scold, and dentists who abhor pain. We are most grateful loving God for the moments when we are suddenly aware that our prayers have been answered, because you are ever attentive to your children’s needs. Thank you, again, we say in the name of the Christ. Amen.

THE OFFERING INVITATION
Loyalty is a word my mother taught me was the virtue above all others that the Burr family was expected to live up to. Through thick and thin, no matter what a Burr sticks to family members and friends, political party, church, grocery store, dry cleaners, pharmacy, package store and the gas station where the guy still pumps gas for you. Of course understood in that loyalty was a choice. You don’t necessarily choose your family, but sometimes you do; you certainly do choose everything else. But what of your loyalty when your political party or your church no longer validates what you have always believed or held to be true? If your friends’ and family’s life experience and opinions differ from yours, what then to do you do with your loyalty? Do you decide that your loyalty was misplaced, or do you break out of the husk of your assumptions and expectations to learn something new about yourself? Always remember, the church is here to help you accomplish that.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God, we have come to understand that offering our gifts is an act of worship just as important as praying, singing and attending to your word in scripture. October 12, 2014 "SAYING NO TO GOD" Matthew 22:1-14

A NEW LIFE AFFIRMATION
It is God who lovingly gave us the breath of life. May all our days be occasions of thanksgiving for the gifts of life and grace.
It is Jesus who, though he was equal with God, would not exploit his divinity.
Instead he emptied himself, for our sakes, becoming one like us. Because he first loved us, his name shall be on our lips at dawn and dusk. He is our Good News forever.
When Jesus was crucified, and died with forgiveness on his lips, it was God who raised him from the dead so we would know God’s kingdom has no end. Not only do we receive new life in Jesus Christ, but eternal life, as well.
It is Jesus who promised us a constant companion and helper, even the Holy Spirit. Present at Jesus’ baptism, the Spirit is a witness to the truth of Christ. That same Spirit is a witness in the moment of our baptism. We listen for the voice of the Spirit speaking the language of redemption to our souls.
The Church is peopled with disciples of Jesus seeking to love one another. We gather spiritual strength from our unfettered worship of God the three-in-one. Refreshed and renewed we work out our salvation, side by side, united heart, body and mind in ministry to all the world.
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Holy and Wondrous Lord, God of Power and God of Love, we have accepted your very special invitation by entering this sanctuary. You have consecrated this space to be a place of spiritual rest, where peace of mind is freely offered and can be gained. We have come to understand that with your wondrous blessings come invitations that challenge us and call us to engage in hands on ministry to one another and the world beyond these doors. Even with the overcrowded schedules we keep, help us create discipleship moments. It may be something as simple as deciding to stop talking about ourselves and our woes, and listen to someone else’s story over enchiladas and lemonade. Wondrous God we thank you for bringing people into our lives whose courage and stamina gives us a whole new outlook on our own good fortune. Continue to invite and challenge us so that we may grow and mature spiritually. In the name of the Christ we pray. Amen.
THE OFFERING INVITATION
How many of you receive invitations to parties, weddings, charity balls and fancy events? How many of those invitations ask you to RSVP? I think most folks know that those 4 capitalized letters are some kind of code asking for a yea or nay to the invite or E-vite. I don’t think we put much thought into what they stand for unless we are fans of Emily Post. For all we know they could stand for: reply special vegetarian preference or reply selection veal or prime rib or respond soon verbally by phone? Actually the letters abbreviate a French phrase: Répondez s'il vous plait, translated Respond, if you please. The act of RSVP-ing is simply an act of courtesy. These days our calendars get so full, half of the time we forget we RSVP’d, “Yes,” and fail to show up to the event. Many more folks ignore the invitation altogether. If we understand invitations to be a nice gesture, we should understand that to respond is the appropriate courtesy. I invite you to this time of offering. As the plate is passed, Répondez s'il vous plait.
Amen.

OCTOBER 5, 2014 "FORGETTING WHAT LIES BEHIND"

A NEW LIFE AFFIRMATION by Rev. Dr. Amanda Burr
Glorious God, this is a day of new beginnings for all of us as we witness baptisms and new member commitments. We are all renewed in our commitment today as we celebrate the strengthening and growth of the Body of Christ. Oh how wonderful it is, when people who love Jesus, find a place and a way to invest their time, talents and energy in ministry to one another and the world. Teach us how to care for each other, to uphold and support one another as we journey together on the path of discipleship. Ever grateful for your blessings, we accept the challenges life brings. Guide us in the ways of kindness and understanding. Cleanse our souls of impatience, and the clutter of things past that cannot be changed. Remind us, that in Jesus we can be new beings every morning. In his name we pray. Amen.
PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
Some of my clergy colleagues place the time of the offering in a different location in the worship service; specifically, they put it after the sermon. I understand their thinking. If the preacher succeeds in giving a rip-roaring sermon, come might conclude that what comes in the offering plate reflects the prowess of the preacher or the merit of the sermon’s content. To me, placing the offering after the sermon has the potential for reducing the offering to a kind of spiritual applause-meter. If the preacher did a good job, those in attendance at the service might be more generous. Then again, my colleagues might be thinking that placing the offering after the sermon gives the folks twenty more minutes to decide what they will give and write the check. To me, it doesn’t matter where the offering is in the service. It could be right after the prelude because it is an act of worship, an expression of our love for God, not a tip, a token or monetary kudos for a job well done.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God, offering our gifts is an act of worship, just as important as our praying, singing and attending to your word for us. We are happy to place our trust in you, seeking to discern your will and way for us. Our hearts are full as we labor in your vineyard, sharing the work with our brother and sister Christians. September 28, 2014 "WORKING UP A SALVATION SWEAT"

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Glorious God, our maker, creator and redeemer, dare we call you friend? Too many people in this world have been taught that you are a power and a presence to be feared and yet we describe you as merciful and loving. As we work out the meaning of salvation, the question we must answer is this: Do we really believe what we confess? When we are confronted by the evil that permeates our daily lives, we wonder where you are in the midst of it all. We are praying you will intervene, like Superman and save human beings from themselves. We confess some resentment at your not being the divine fixer of all that is awful, evil, sick and twisted. We wonder why you allow us to do unto others what we would not do to ourselves. Maybe if you turn out the lights for just a little while, we would have to stop and fend for ourselves, groping to find our way in the darkness. We wouldn’t know if the hand we grasped in that darkness was friend or foe, only that both hands were asking for help. Hear our prayer, O Lord. Amen.
PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
We live in a world that offers miraculous panaceas for just about any condition: overweight, balding, joint pain, depression, dry eyes, anything that leaks, even a lackluster sex life. I remember laughing out loud when a friend asked if there wasn’t a pill to cure someone’s incessant babbling. “There must be a pill for that!” You can’t watch prime television these day without hearing about the latest pill to fix problems that aren’t topics of polite conversation. But there are no pills to improve spiritual growth, or enhance one’s prayer performance. There are no miraculous drops to clear spiritual blindness, or fizzy drinks to energize one’s serving and giving capabilities. We have to work at comprehending what it means to keep the Christ in the center of our lives. This is a heart, body and mind workout that will be worth everything, in the end.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God, offering our gifts is an act of worship just as important as our praying singing and attending to your word for us. We are happy to place our trust in you, seeking to discern your will and way for us. Our hearts are full as we labor in your vineyard sharing the work with our brother and sister Christians. As we reach out to those in heed, lending our hearts and hands to heal a broken and hurting world, let us bring glory to your name. All this we pray in the name of the Christ. Amen.

September 21, 2014 "PRIVILEGED TO BELIEVE AND SUFFER"

AFFIRMATION OF CREATION AND TRANSFORMATION
We believe in one creative God, righteous and patient, merciful and just. We believe that God created all that is and all that lives. God is perpetually creating. We believe that God’s
handiwork is well thought out, diverse, colorful, and inspiring. We accept that God
has entrusted the earth, and all that is in it, to our care.
We believe that Jesus was given unto the world in order that humankind could know the true heart of God. Jesus’ life revealed God’s willing presence in our lives. His death revealed God’s love and his resurrection from the dead revealed God’s power.
We believe that God’s Holy Spirit came to us in the nick of time, while we held our breath, wondering what to do next. Proof that God is perpetually creating, the Spirit whispers truth, love and justice, showing us how to walk humbly with God.
We believe in the church. It is the body of Christ called to continue his work in the world. Like God’s creation, the church is a living organism, evolving, responding and transforming itself when all of creation cries out for change.
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
God of Grace and Mercy, we come into your presence to praise you, hoping in every hymn, or prayer uttered, to make a spiritual connection that will quicken us, invigorate us, warm our hearts and energize us for ministry. Like witnesses who are sworn in, in a court of law, prepare us, Lord, to give testimony to your promises fulfilled, your unyielding hope for humanity, your unfailing mercy, and your never ending love. We confess our timidity and fear, our hesitancy to step out in faith, trusting that you will uphold us in our efforts. With our every breath we seek to live in response to your leading. Even if we fail to comprehend or discern your purpose, we will follow after Jesus, living in the light of your commandment to love, endeavoring to do no harm and to do all the good we can. Guide us onward, we pray, in the name of the Christ. Amen.
PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
You’ve heard of the privileged class. In today’s world, the word privilege is understood as a restricted right or benefit not afforded to just anyone. We understand it as an advantage enjoyed only by the elite. But “privilege” comes from the Latin word Privilegium, which in Rome was a law made in-favor-of or against a singular individual. Only the Emperor could confer this anomalous or irregular right, obligation or punishment. If one received a special right or benefit, it was seen as favorable privilegium. In contrast, if obligations were imposed or punishments inflicted, these were seen as odious privilegium. Reserved only for the one chosen, whether benefit or obligation, favor or punishment, the privilegium was a private matter; not just anyone was privy to this Imperial conference. Paul, who was familiar with the laws of Rome, wrote to the church in Philippi regarding the privilege God conferred upon him — that is the privilegium of believing in the Jesus Christ, which comes with benefits and obligations.

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Our most Glorious Creator, and wonder-working God, we offer our humble thanks for the privilege of faith. Energized, invigorated and inspired by your presence here, we open ourselves to your leading. Keep us ever mindful of the beliefs we share in common, the true north of our faith-compass, the essential Christ. Let us not allow differing opinions to mar our fellowship, rather help us embrace what is essential, always being charitable to one another. We love our diversity and it certainly flavors our fellowship, but it is not what keeps the church on course. Our unity in Christ Jesus is what sets our course and offers the best way for us to relate to the world and the people around us. Strengthen your church for the work ahead. Transform us, that we may transform the church, for the healing of the world. In the name of the Christ, we pray. Amen.

PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
Essence is the intrinsic nature or indispensable quality of something, especially something abstract, that determines its character. Synonyms for essence are “soul,” “spirit,” and “nature.” The essence is the property of existence. Without its essence a living organism cannot exist. Chefs use extracts and concentrates from plants and call it the essence. They use the plant’s essence to flavor the foods they prepare. I guess we could say that our human essence, is our flavor. Essentials are the indispensable elements of life and human existence. Essentials like food, shelter and clothing are necessary to sustain life. Faith Essentials are the indispensable elements of our spiritual life and are necessary to sustain hope. Sanctuary is that essential shelter where spiritual beings can connect with the one who gives us our life and our essence. Here we are free to cultivate and discover our spiritual flavor.

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Wondrous and Loving, God, it is good to gather in worship, to be with our fellows, our brothers and sisters, co-workers in Christ, living as those who embrace the good news. We confess that that being citizens of the most powerful nation on earth, we can be overcome by a kind of national arrogance, believing that we are designated to turn the hearts of other nations to the right. Help us remember that you speak to people in all corners of the world, in the language of their culture. Remind us, daily, that our culture has not been ordained the best or better way. We are not called to impose or insert our ways into the lives of your children in other parts of the world. Lord, God cause us to realize that your heart beats within them, so they have much to teach us. Give us hearts full of your grace; hearts for healing a broken world. Cleanse our hearts of mistrust and fear and make us one with the Christ and one with each other. In Jesus’s name we pray. Amen.

PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
The origins of offerings date back thousands of years. Leviticus outlines 5 different types of offerings presented to God. The burnt offering expresses dedication directing the people of God to serve the Lord with a singleness of heart expecting no benefit in return (please don’t light something on fire and put it in the plate). The meal offering was an act of worship offering to God that which was produced by the labor of one’s hands. The peace offering expressed one’s joy, peace, and gratitude, and because it was shared between the worshipper and the priests, it signified joint participation, fellowship, and friendship — these being the characteristics of true worship. The sin offering made atonement for sins done through ignorance. The trespass offering is a satisfaction or restitution offering made for sins committed by invading or disregarding of another person’s property. The time of offering is not to be seen or construed as a time of asking, rather it is an act of worship.

UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God, we worship you with our gifts and affirm our faith and trust in your will and way for us. Our desire is to serve you with singleness of heart, to share fellowship with all Christians and to atone for ignoring your will in a hurting world. We seek, always to bring glory to your name, as we endeavor to help those in need and learn better ways to care for all of creation. In the name of the Christ, we pray. Amen.

August 24, 2014 "ON BEING A NON-CONFORMIST"

*AN AFFIRMATION OF FAITH GLEANED FROM ROMANS 10:5-15
We believe, from the very beginning, God poured out goodness, mercy
and love on every living thing, and God continues to do so today.
God’s word is ever near us, on our lips and in our hearts,
for God has written his truth upon our hearts.
We believe with our hearts and confess with our lips that Jesus is Lord.
We have no doubt that God raised Jesus from the dead.
We are not ashamed to speak for this confession is our salvation.
In Christ there is no distinction between Jew and Gentile, male or female,
daunted or undaunted, wealthy or poor, oppressed or free. God’s generosity is for all people.
And all who call upon the name of the Lord shall be redeemed.
We believe in the Holy Spirit poured out upon us from birth to death, guiding us through life’s maze of decisions and choices.
We believe in the Church, Christ’s body in the world.
As members of the body we are called to be and to bring the good news
to all who have ears to hear and hearts to receive.
For faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.
Thanks be to God!
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
We praise you O God! We praise your name Loving Abba Father, Dearest Son and Wondrous Holy Spirit. We give thanks to you, our most gracious and merciful God, seeking only to please you in word and deed. We confess how very often the world seems to encroach on our best intentions to follow in the Way. Life in this world, in this society, particularly today is by no means simple and, when its complexities threaten to overwhelm us, we confess how easy it is to put our faith on hold or on the back burner where it gets less attention. Help us to overcome the kind of worldly thinking that calcifies or cools faith. Teach us how to embrace non-conformity in our discipleship. We pray in the name of Jesus who, turned the world upside down. Amen.
PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
When I was a little girl society’s stand-outs —that is those who did not conform to current societal modes of fashion, were call non-conformists. They were Beatniks, like Maynard G. Krebs on Dobie Gillis. But even I took note that the Beatniks all sort of dressed alike, so you’d know who was a Beatnik and who wasn’t. Later on, Hippies also followed a uniform dress code as did and do Preppies to this day. Because they conform in their fashion statements, they are easily identifiable. Non-conformist historically was the name applied to Protestant Christians who would not "conform" to the governance and usages of the established Church of England. Also called dissenters– like the Puritans who violated the Act of Uniformity in 1559 through their separatist practices — by the 19th century the list of religious non-conformists included Presbyterians, Congregationalists, Baptists and Methodists. Wow, perhaps we ought to give thanks for those practicing non-conformists; without them we might not be here today.

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Wondrous and Merciful God, seated here in this sanctuary, we breathe a sigh of relief and are able to let down our shoulders, for a little while. Having shared the joys that make our hearts glad and the concerns that weigh heavily in our thoughts, we are ready to move on, ready to listen and to explore what your word will reveal to us. Yes, it’s possible for each one of us to grasp different elements of the story or letter being read, but every morsel of your word is tasty and is meant to nourish our hungry spirits. Today we hope to have a better understanding of what it means to confess with our lips and believe in our hearts, to embrace to the fullest our salvation in Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.
PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
Marketing —also known as branding —fascinates me. At its best it is creative and intriguing. At it’s worst it is manipulative and coarse. When watching TV I have been intrigued by David E. Kelley Production’s sign-off logo of the old lady sitting in a rocking chair with her TV remote in hand. As she clicks the remote to turn off the television, the words David E. Kelley Productions fly out of the television and knock over the rocking chair. You hear the old lady cry out “You Stinkah!” Far Field Production’s sign-off logo features a boy, arm outstretched, pointing toward the single tree on the grassy knoll above which appear the words “Far Field Productions. “The boy says: “What’s that mean?” So you remember the last time you asked that? Here is something to ponder. The many writers of the Bible invested their hearts and minds in exploring meaning, asking the question of every life lesson and experience: “What’s that mean?” I think God welcomes the question so let us strive to make the church a safe place to ask it.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God, the gifts we offer affirm our faith and trust in your will and way for us. Our desire is to serve you, undaunted in our efforts to bring glory to your name, help to those in need and care to the earth. In the name of the Christ, we pray. Amen.

August 10, 2014 "THE POWER OF TREPIDATION"

August 3, 2014 "AND THE LEFTOVERS"

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Wondrous and Loving Lord, Sovereign of the Universe, we are humbled in your presence, astounded always by your compassion for your children from every corner of the earth. We confess our confusion and disappointment with the world’s unwillingness or inability to mimic your compassionate, merciful ways. And then we realize that our expectations of the world are unrealistic. Teach us to step out of the trap of disappointed expectations. Help us train up our spirits; muscling-up our faith and trust, truly CROSS-FITTING ourselves for the work of the kingdom. We work as the hands and feet of the Christ offering this prayer in his name. Amen.
PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
Did you eat leftovers as a child? Leftovers are defined as the uneaten edible portions of a meal left after the meal is over. In my house, the leftovers of a Thanksgiving dinner were consumed for days on end when I was growing up. When your mom made too much tuna casserole, or cream chipped beef, or hot dogs and beans, did you dread eating them again for dinner or did you look forward to the repeat meal? The Greek word translated as leftovers is perisseuvvw (perisseúo). It means to exceed, to be over, to be at hand in abundance. In scripture the leftovers are a really good thing. I think we have a tendency to consider our small change — sort of like money leftovers. Why not see it as a sign of abundance as well and put those leftovers to work for the kingdom of God.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God, we take seriously our role as partners with you in sharing your message of love and grace for all of humanity. Our tithes and offerings are just one way by which we affirm our faith and trust in you. It is in giving of what we have that we ready our hearts, bodies and minds to follow your will. May these gifts bring glory to your name, moving us ever closer to the fulfillment of your kingdom upon the earth. In the name of the Christ we pray. Amen.

July 27, 2014 "IS THE WHO YOU?"

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Most Loving and Gracious God, gathering here in this sanctuary to worship together, we are grateful for these moments of spiritual nourishment. As we sing, pray and reflect on your word we confess our relief. For this one hour we are able to receive some respite from the madness that haunts so many populations on this earth. We are rattled, frazzled and despairing of the news reports that attest to humanity’s disregard for humanity. Your children are devalued, divided and destroyed by hatred, jealousy and greed. We pray never to succumb to despair or hopelessness, seeking only to be witnesses of your goodwill , reveling in and boasting without ceasing of your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
I don’t think we thought to much about the word “identity” until someone coupled it with the word crisis back in 1954 and then with the word theft in 1995. So an identity crisis came to be seen as a threat to our who-we-are-ness, that selfness which makes us unique in all the world. Identity theft, may very well cause an identity crisis and is not considered resolvable with therapy. The etymology of the word “identity” refers to sameness, the same, repeatedly, over and over. Identical twins are the same. “Same old, Same old” is the response given by those who are apathetic or have become disillusioned with their circumstances in life. Paul’s epistle to the Hebrews reminds us that sameness is good in Jesus Christ who is the same yesterday, today and forever.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God, we take seriously our role as partners with you in sharing your message of love and grace for all of humanity. Our tithes and offerings are just one way by which we affirm our faith and trust in you and ready our hearts, bodies and minds to follow your will. May these gifts bring glory to your name, moving us ever closer to the fulfillment of your kingdom upon the earth. In the name of the Christ we pray. Amen.

July 20, 2014 "GROW UP ALREADY"

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Gracious and Loving Abba Father, pour your energizing, revitalizing Spirit of goodwill upon us this morning as we worship you in joy and wonderment. We are awed by the works of your hands and the preciseness of your creation. We are aware that we cannot ignore our role in sustaining the balance of nature and, in turn, the integrity of the universe. Help us to be better, more conscientious stewards of the resources you provide. Make us understand and let us teach our children that our food is not grown in cardboard boxes, harvested complete with special sauce and pickles. Remind us that it is your earth which yields the food that nourishes the animals we consume, the brightly colored vegetables and delectable fruits we treasure — enough to feed the world. Inspire us, we pray, with wondrous possibilities. Keep us from apathy and ignorance in the name of the Christ we pray. Amen.
PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
Rev. Amanda writes: Measuring growth is done in lots of ways. My father made a measuring guide out of a 4 inch wide sheet of steel which he bolted to a door threshold. He measured our height, marked it off with a pencil and wrote our names next to the mark. When we moved, it went with us. After my father died, my younger brother began using it to measure the height of his children. Diplomas from high school, college and graduate school measure intellectual growth. Bank balances measure fiscal growth, budgetary prudence and saving fortitude. But how does one measure congregational growth? Some people count heads, others view the bank balance, others look at what is happening, at how often and how many cars are in the parking lot. However, when all the numbers are recorded, I believe the measure of true growth is the spiritual confidence a congregation offers to those who come in search of sanctuary. Keep up the good work! The ushers will now come forward to receive your offerings.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God, bless these offerings to be a message of your grace and mercy for all the world. May they speak loudly of our faith, our commitment and our trust in your will and way for us. May our gifts work for your kingdom; bringing relief, assurance and comfort to your children. We pray in the name of the Christ. Amen.

July 13, 2014 "SOWING IN GOOD SOIL"

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Glorious God, Gracious Sovereign of the Universe, we come into this sanctuary conscious that we are in search of something. Perhaps we are looking for a place to rest and get cool away from the heat outdoors. Perhaps we have come searching for a few moments of respite for our weary stressed-to-the-max-souls. Maybe it is human contact we long for, or a word of welcome and arms that will embrace us without hesitation. Some of us must confess that we haven’t a clue what to expect from this worship experience, but we intend, no matter what, to be nourished on your word and the communion elements. We are confident that our spirits will be renewed in the company of this family of faith, for whether we are strangers or friends, we are bound together in trust and love by our faith in Jesus Christ. Hear us, as we pray the prayer that your Christ taught us.
PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
Rev. Amanda writes: “I am by no stretch of the imagination a gardener, but ever since I was challenged by that community garden idea back in January, I have gone on some different reading adventures. While reading Barbara Kingsolver’s book “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle,” I realized just how far removed we all are from recognizing and comprehending the source of the foods we eat, or just how much fossil fuel is expended in bringing the food to us. Did you know there are people who have collected and guarded ancestral seeds, passed down through farming families from generation to generation? They are called heirloom seeds, and with these seeds it is actually possible to grow a 19th century vegetable garden, medicinal herb gardens—for simple home remedies, kitchen herbs and more. Churches, like good gardens, are a labor of love passed on from generation to generation. They must be tended well for them to grow and continue to yield a good harvest.” The ushers will come forward to receive the offering.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God, bless these offerings as a message of your grace and mercy for all the world. May they speak loudly of our faith, our commitment and our trust in your will and way for us. May our gifts work for your kingdom, bringing

July 6, 2014 "BOUGHT THE T-SHIRT"

AN ELEMENTAL AFFIRMATION
We believe God is neither distant nor far off, never casual or detached, but always vigilant and searching to be a part of our lives.
We believe God knows all of the sorrows and trials the human heart bears in a lifetime. Because God did not abandon Jesus in death, but raised him from the dead; we are assured that God will not abandon us even if we should abandon ourselves.
We believe God’s Holy Spirit is poured out in fullest measure
upon all who boldly seek God.
This Spirit fulfills God’s hopes for us that we might know joy in this life and the next.
We believe that we are part of God’s creation mosaic, in all our diverse shapes, sizes and colors. Each one of us is an integral piece of a vast and gloriously expanding puzzle, which has no fixed boundaries up, down, behind or before.
We are the church and we are grateful. Amen.
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Most Gracious and Loving Lord, how ironic it is that on this very weekend when we celebrate our nation’s independent ideals, we need to acknowledge our dependence upon you. Apart from your grace and your goodwill, we would still be wandering in the wilderness, worshiping golden calves. We must, however, confess our fears. As we age we are afraid of losing that independence we so cherish. We are afraid of losing our health and our ability to choose for ourselves. O, most Merciful One, when we are overcome and frustrated by the stresses and strains of having to take driving tests, defend our pharmaceuticals, sort out which tests will or will not be covered by our health insurance, help us surrender our wearying worry by taking upon our shoulders the lighter yoke offered to us by Jesus. Hear us, now, as we pray the prayer your Christ taught us.
PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
Rev. Amanda writes: I receive a myriad of catalogues in the mail and most of them don’t make it into the house; they go straight into the recycle bin. However, the catalogues that offer T-shirts, with clever sayings on them, sometimes make it past the front door. It’s not the shirt, but the message that draws my attention. I have been known to buy the T-shirts with really sarcastic messages for my older brother. He introduced me to the website known as “Despair.com” — they boast an array of colorful de-motivation posters like: “Mercy” “Teach every child you meet the importance of forgiveness. It's our only hope of surviving their wrath once they realize just how badly we've screwed things up for them.” Or “Challenges” “I expected times like this - but I never thought they'd be so bad, so long, and so frequent.” I think it’s safe to say we become Christians so cynicism doesn’t get the better or best of us. The ushers will now come forward to receive your offerings.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God, bless these offerings as a message of your grace and mercy for all the world. May they speak loudly of our faith, our commitment and our trust in your will and way for us. May our gifts work for your kingdom, bringing relief, assurance and comfort to your children. We pray in the name of the Christ. Amen.

June 29, 2014 "So When Are the Rest Of You Really Going To Trust Me?"

Glorious God, our most Loving and Gracious Creator, we give you thanks for this new day, which brings with it another opportunity to worship you in the company of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Those of us who helped out with Vacation Bible School are so very grateful for your inspiration as we spent time helping our children discover the important part you play in all of our lives. Participating in such an adventure we can all be reminded how truly you are the worker of wonders. We admit that when things look complicated we can tend to anticipate the worst, and are always amazed when the wonderful happens. Remind us that we are the ones who choose. We can worry or we can put our trust in you, but we can’t do both. Keep us on course by your ever-presence with us and hear us as we pray the prayer your Christ taught us.
PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
Rev Amanda writes: “My tax man told me it was time for me to establish a living trust so that when I die my assets will not be tied up in probate court. He gave me that homework assignment on March 17th to complete by tax time next year. I am usually pretty trustworthy with homework assignments, but it’s June and Friday the 13th and I haven’t started my assignment. Imagine my relief when I started to study up on these Living Trusts and learned that I could name myself as Trustee and manage my own assets. Great! I can also name a co-trustee who can take over when I just can’t figure it out anymore. I realized that we, as members of the body of Christ, are all trustees of Christ’s church. Every time we baptize a child or welcome a new member, we promise God that we can be trusted to care for the church and our brothers and sisters in Christ.” Think of yourselves as God’s co-trustees! The ushers will now come forward to collect the offering.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God, bless these offerings as a message of your grace and mercy for all the world. May they speak loudly of our faith, our commitment and our trust in your will and way for us. May our gifts work for your kingdom; bringing relief, assurance and comfort to your children. We pray in the name of the Christ. Amen.

June 22, 2014 "HOW DO YOU SPELL SIN?"

AN AFFIRMATION OF FAITH FOR THE SEASON OF PENTECOST
The Spirit of God moved over the face of the waters and brought the world into being.
That same Spirit breathes life into us today.
The Spirit of God conceived a Messiah, the Son and beloved One. His name meant salvation. He was our Emmanuel — God with us.
When Jesus gave up his life for us he entrusted his Spirit giving it into God’s hands and God raised him from the dead.
The Spirit of God poured the language of salvation in Christ Jesus into the hearts, minds and mouths of his disciples empowering them to tell their story to all the world.
That same Spirit moves in and through the Church, the Body of Christ,
empowering us to witness to the truth of Christ, in loving service to all.
Thanks be to God! Amen.
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Wondrous and Loving God, be with us today as we focus our hearts and minds in prayer, readying ourselves for the movement of your Spirit, in our individual lives and in the life of this congregation. Pastor and church members will be separated for a while and we confess it makes us all a bit anxious. We believe with your help the days ahead can be a time of renewal for all of us, a time of discovering the best or our discipleship practices as we hone our spiritual disciplines. We will pray for one another daily, confident that even our most muddled and inadequate prayers will be heard. As we listen to others preach your word we will receive it and take it in, because the scriptures revealed are like spiritual vitamins certain to give us strength for the new day. Nourished, not only by your presence, but on your word, we are your servants in Jesus Christ in whose name we pray. Amen.

May 25, 2014 "THE ATHENIAN APOLOGY"

May 18, 2014 "TRUST THAT I AM, IT'S ALL GOOD"

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Dearest “ I AM,” most gracious and loving Lord, you have given us the gift of your presence through the eons. You have invited us to partake of your mercy and forgiveness offering these to people from all walks of life; to the righteous and the unrighteous, to the successful and the faltering, to the bereft and those who lack for nothing. We confess that we have fallen short of your glory, visiting our criticism, or impatience upon one another. But we relish those warmed-heart moments that come to us when we discover the lengths to which you have gone to prove your love for us and be part of our lives. Jesus sought to show us how to love by his example and we pray everyday that you will empower us, as his followers, to inspire others by our example. Give us the will and means to serve one another patiently anticipating the coming of your kingdom upon the earth. In the name of the beloved, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
A few years ago I began renaming this part of the worship service calling it Preparing for the offering. I decided to use the present participle of “prepare” as an invitation for you to take these few moments to rummage through your pockets, purses or wallets to locate whatever gift you were preparing to place in the offering plate when it passes through your hands — in another moment or two. I know there are those of you who are eternally unprepared for this point in the service and there are those who don’t really have a clue about offerings and the whole plate-passing business. The uninformed will figure it out eventually —we need your offering not only to help others but to pay the bills. I am only thankful that I have never, yet, seen anyone caught so unawares that they pull away throwing their hands up in the air to avoid touching the money plate as it goes by. And too, though I have heard people joke about it, I have never seen anyone trying to make change. I hope these few words have given you the time you needed to prepare for the offering.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Gracious God, grateful for the day of resurrection, we continue in this Eastertide to rejoice in your promise fulfilled. There is no clearer message of goodwill — no more graphic demonstration of your love — no greater assurance of your hope for humanity, than the resurrection of your Christ. May our tithes and offerings, succeed in bringing the message of your love and goodwill to those who have never known it. In the name of the risen Christ we pray. Amen.

May 11, 2014 Mother's Day "BY THIS EVERYONE WILL KNOW"

AN AFFIRMATION OF FAITH FOR EASTERTIDE Written by Dr. Burr
We trust and affirm that each of us is created in the image of God.
God’s Grace is immeasurable and God’s will for us is always Goodwill.
We believe that Jesus Christ lived to forgive, to heal the broken hearted and proclaim God’s love to the world.
We believe Jesus bore our shame carrying our sins to the cross where he surrendered his own spirit to God in order to set our spirits free.
God promised that Jesus would not be given up to death and, true to that promise, God raised him from the dead.
We trust in the counsel of The Holy Spirit who guides us in our efforts to live out the commandment to love one another as Christ loved us.
We believe the Holy Spirit moves us ever onward toward perfection and for this we give thanks to God. Amen
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Wondrous and Loving God, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Sovereign of the universe, how very good it feels to be in your presence gathered together to worship you. We confess that we get into a rut when it comes to addressing you in prayer. We don’t use adjectives or superlatives when we call upon your name, rather we repeat the names we have heard or were taught, Almighty God, Our Father, Mother/Father God, Dearest Lord, or Abba — the name Jesus used. Oh, most glorious author of LIFE and LOVE, bring us closer to your heart of grace. Give us new visions of your engaging presence in our lives and empower us to be inspiring, passionate, ever-inviting, followers of Jesus in whose name we pray. Amen.
PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
I learned a lot in my travels last week. For example the cheapest airline ticket cost $356, but a comfortable seat in coach costs extra — anywhere from $20 to $35 more per flight. Checking “a” bag — carry-on or larger — costs $25, but if I am willing to drag my carry-on all the way to the gate, the airline will beg me to let them check that same bag for free. I learned at 11:45 PM, that no matter when I reserved that special deal midsized rent-a-car, it would not be available. They had a mini-van available for the deal price or the good people at Budget would let me rent one of their premium cars for just $20 more a day. I needed the GPS to find my way around costing me another $15.64 a day; the liability —only— insurance cost me $16 a day, plus a bunch of taxes and something called concessions. So the 5-day-$338-midsized-car-deal escalated in to a $626 push-button-ignition-red-Taurus. Perhaps the most important lesson I learned was never to arrive late at night unless armed with plenty of chutzpah. I think we should be grateful for the predictability of Tithing. There are just no add-ons in the church.

April 27, 2014 "MISSING OUT"

AN AFFIRMATION OF FAITH FOR EASTERTIDE written by Rev. Dr. Amanda J. Burr

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Most loving and mysterious Creator hear our prayer. Let not the wonder of Easter slip too quickly away, making it just another holiday that is over and done for this year. Let our amazement at the radiance and lightning-like appearance of the angel at the tomb linger for weeks to come. We confess our desire to touch some tangible proof of the resurrection, and to rest in the substantive truth of it. But then we realize how you would not have us rest, until the race is finished. In the days ahead, as we follow in the footsteps of Christ’s disciples, we shall seek to grow in faith, as they did. They will show us how being in prayer together gave them a spiritual strength and stamina they had never thought possible. Our faith looks up to thee. Show us the way. In the name of the Christ we pray.
PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
Some of the Trustees and I went on a field trip the other day to the Coachella Valley Water District’s Garden of Desert Flora. We saw the lush and vibrant colors of desert plants many of which brought me back into the mood and spirit of Holy Week; the purple passion flower vine, the red flowered crown of thorns bush, the butterfly iris. The fiery red blossoms that adorn the spiny core of the barrel cactus reminded me of the coming day of Pentecost. The Trustees’ hope and mine is to gradually introduce these conservation conscious plants onto the church’s campus and into our memory garden. Indeed their colors and their names promise to remind us of the creative spirit of God that is ever in our midst.

April 20, 2014 EASTER SUNDAY "MATTHEW'S MARVELOUS MESSAGES"

AFFIRMATIONS FOR EASTER (***)
Each of us is created in the image of God. Believe it!
God’s will for us is GOODWILL— always. Believe it!
We follow the Christ who lived to forgive. Believe it!
Jesus showed us a new way to connect with God by serving one another. We claim his mission as our mission, to bind up the broken hearted and proclaim release to those held captive by fear.
Jesus carried to the cross all that separated us from God. When he died those sins died with him. He promised that his death would not be the end and on the morning of the third day God raised him from the dead! Believe it!
Jesus opened wide the door that leads to the heart of God and invited everybody to enter in. Believe it!
God’s Holy Spirit is ever present, moving in our lives and speaking the truth to all who have ears to hear. Believe it!
We become the body of Christ living the as we strive to live out the commandment to love God and each other. Believe it! Amen!
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Ever-Surprising and unfathomable Lord, what a glorious morning this is! Our hearts are triumphant. Our spirits are full and we rejoice at the news of Christ’s resurrection. Let our response to your promise fulfilled be unreserved and boisterously glad. Christ’s resurrection is your most wondrous, mysterious and wholly unchangeable gift of love. We held our breath with the disciples who witnessed Jesus’ crucifixion, afraid, paralyzed, waiting to exhale. Today you have revealed what lies beyond grief and mourning. Your message for all the world is clear. The tomb is empty, and life, with all of its ups and downs, has been touched by the promise of eternity. We can breathe again, no longer afraid. Our faith renewed, our spirits ignited we shall be your witnesses in and for the world. We’ll shout it from the mountain tops. “Today you have made all things new! Christ is Risen. Christ is Risen indeed.” We give you thanks and praise in his glorious name. Amen.
PREPARING FOR THE OFFERING
I was looking for some artwork to use in our Holy Week newspaper ad and came across this picture of an, obviously abandoned, plastic Easter Egg...emptied of its contents and left on the floor by a young egg hunter. For some reason this silly blue plastic egg spoke volumes to me. It reminded me, not of a bunny rabbit cavorting about with a basket of marshmallow, chocolate and colored eggs, but of the empty tomb. You see, before being opened the blue egg was a vessel containing a mystery. Nearby — face smeared with chocolate — is a child wondering if there might be something more in the egg. How will we tell them that the empty egg is everything! Our Special Easter Offering will go to support the efforts of the Imagine No Malaria campaign.
