May 1, 2016 "THE CART BEFORE THE HORSE?"

AN EASTER AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
We trust and affirm that each of us is created in the image of God.
We believe God’s Grace to be immeasurable, and God’s will for us always Goodwill.
We believe that Jesus, the beloved Son of God, lived to forgive,
to heal the broken hearted, and proclaim God’s love to the world.
Jesus took our shame and regret, and bearing them upon his own back, he carried them to the cross, where he surrendered his own precious life.
We believe he did this to set our spirits free.
We believe that Jesus did not die in vain and his death was not the end of anything.
God is better than that!
True to his promise, on this the FIRST day of the Week, God raised Jesus from the dead! YES! We believe it!
We believe in the Holy Spirit, God’s gift of presence. We trust the Holy Spirit to guide us as we endeavor to live the commandment to love each other as Christ loved us.
We believe the Holy Spirit moves us ever onward toward Christian perfection.
Thanks be to God! Amen!
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Loving and Eternal God as we witness the baptism of Simon and the reception into the body of Doug and Robin, we are reminded ourselves of when we were newcomers to the body. We have all been beginners at something, and we confess that there are times we have felt like strangers in a strange land. Empower us to be fearless in our welcome of our new members, embracing every person who desires to unite with this body of Christ. Help us to be alert always to the needs of our brothers and sisters, ministering to one another with our prayers, our gifts, our service, our participation and our witness. O Lord, indeed this is a day, which you have made. We rejoice and are glad, for every soul who joins the body. Together we are working in the name of Jesus Christ for your kingdom come upon the earth and for the healing of the world. Amen.

We don’t have a treasure chest hidden away in a dark cavern somewhere from which we can withdraw cash whenever we need it. We depend upon your gifts and NO GIFT IS TOO SMALL! MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR OTHERS AND YOURSELF. Our insurance company will love you for it.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Wondrous and Eternal God, pour out your blessing upon these gifts and promises. We offer them with full and grateful hearts. CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
God of Grace and Glory as we bow our heads in prayer together, we are made aware of our oneness. We are all different, colorful and various individuals united as one body in Christ. In prayer we begin to comprehend our connection with you. Your desire was to be tangible to us, to be in touch with us, in the person of Jesus. We confess that we often forget to be amazed by your graciousness, and the wonder of your creative ways. Let our prayerful efforts erase doubts and fears. Fill us with complete confidence in the peace you promise to all those who muster faith in every circumstance. May we be your grateful servants in our moments of triumph, and your trusting children in moments of failure. All this we pray in the name of our savior, redeemer and Lord, Jesus Christ. Amen.
OFFERING INVITATION
The word award is both a noun and a verb. One is awarded an award after careful consideration. The key to the definition lies in “after careful consideration.” The word reward is also both a noun and a verb. A person is rewarded with a reward because they have been regarded well by the rewarder or they are being compensated for providing a service. Just reward means about the same thing as just deserts (this is the more correct spelling it comes from the Latin deservire =meaning deserve). If one gets what one deserves, in the realm of human thinking, then the reward or the desert is just. In the realm of God, grace has been awarded to all of humankind. What we do with that award — how we respond to God’s generously awarded GRACE speaks volumes about our worthiness to receive it. (You may need to read this a few times.)
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER
Wondrous and Eternal God, pour out your blessing upon the gifts we bring. We offer them with full and grateful hearts, trusting that you will guide us in our use of them. Proclaiming our belief that all things are possible with you, we offer ourselves in service, seeking always, in the name of the Christ, to do your work and will. Amen.

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Glorious God in the midst of our worship, as we offer praise and thanksgiving, we are seeking to understand how you would have us serve you in this world. It is so easy to get distracted by the day to day troublesome things; the house needs endless repairs, the car is in the shop, the microwave is on the fritz, and we often feel like we are chasing our own tail. Some of us over 60 confess to wondering if we will outlive our bank account and our friends, or end up being a burden to our children. Inspire us, Lord, to get busy in your name. Show us new ways to serve you and the church. Let us feel that renewed sense of honor knowing our purpose as Christ’s witnesses. As we continue to celebrate the resurrection day, make us instruments of your peace. In the name of the Christ we pray. Amen.
OFFERING INVITATION
Churches are notorious for hoarding just about everything, and not keeping track of important business paper work, such as contracts entered into, Articles of Incorporation, Mortgage Re-Conveyances, Current Maintenance Agreements and so on. I am not saying that the church throws such important documents away or shreds them, no, but they are often found in a cardboard box full of papers that should have been shredded 40 years ago. I spent the day Tuesday shredding some of that 40 year old stuff as I searched for the important stuff. Now if anyone asks you what a pastor does other than preach on Sunday you can tell them yours engages in rummage and shred missions.

Wondrous and Loving God, because the resurrection of Jesus occurred on the First Day of the Week, his disciples made this a day of holy celebration, as they remembered your mighty acts in Jesus Christ. As that first, first day of the week continued to unfold, it became clear that you were not going to allow the momentum of those mighty acts to slow or abate. The disciples who remained were called into action, prepared or not, to continue ministering in Jesus’ name. We confess that we have felt as unprepared to carry-on his work in the world, as those who were closest to Jesus Nevertheless from our baptismal day you have called each of us to work in your vineyard cultivating the ground of goodwill that is sure to yield the most glorious fruit. Lord, give us the stamina to keep at it in Jesus name. Amen.
OFFERING INVITATION
I think people would rather count down the number of shopping days until Christmas than count down the number of days until April 15th our tax return filing deadline day. The Washington D.C. Emancipation Day holiday is being observed on Friday April 15 this year (giving the federal government employees a 3 day weekend) instead of April 16th, which is a Saturday when no one would be around to celebrate. So Tax Day has been moved to Monday, April 18th. Let us give thanks for the two day grace period granted to those of us who will be obliged to get our tribute postmarked and mailed, now, by Monday. And, why not start today building your charitable donation portfolio for your 2016 taxes by giving generously to your church.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Wondrous and Loving God, in this season of Eastertide we are called to revel in the great good news of Jesus’ resurrection as if it was as fresh today as two thousand years ago. Help us fully comprehend what you were trying to communicate to us and to the mourning followers of Jesus. Were you shouting out to us from the empty tomb, urging us to trust you in all things? We confess to lives governed by alarm clocks and timetables. We want to be prepared for anything, most especially what is to come. When we are tied up in knots over what may happen tomorrow, help us to recognize the blessings of this moment, this day, and this company. In the name of the Christ we pray. Amen.
OFFERING INVITATION
You’ve heard the expression: “If I had a nickel for every time, I heard that, I’d be rich.” The use of a nickel suggests that the idiom was born at a time when a nickel was actually worth something. With inflation the nickel became a dime, a quarter, fifty cents and a dollar. Pronounced in a sarcastic tone accompanied by the rolling of the eyes; it is fatalistic, often referring to the frequency of promises made, but rarely kept. The idiom is a complaint, and can be about the dog next door that never stops barking, the bad habits of a spouses, siblings, bosses and friends, or even the mispronunciation of one’s last name. Now, if the church had a dollar for every time you spoke the name of God, in praise or in vain we would meet our budget and then some.
UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
Glorious God, we can barely contain our excitement on this incredible morning when we celebrate simply the greatest most wonderful gift —besides creation of course—that you have bestowed on humankind. Our hearts quicken as we sing the glorious Easter hymn, our minds and spirits soaring where Christ has led. We have tossed aside our mourning clothes trading them in for the bright colors of the newborn spring, because with the resurrection of Jesus, death has lost it’s sting. Thank You God for the empty tomb surprise; Let it be a reminder to us, that you are always at work trying to get our attention. Today the Christ has opened paradise and is calling us all to follow him on The Way. Let us never forget that being made like him, like him we will rise. By our faith we are made ready for that day when the trumpet shall sound, and we shall be raised incorruptible. All hail the power of Jesus’ name. Amen.
OFFERING INVITATION

SUNRISE SERVICE MARCH 27, 2016 WHO WILL RISE?

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER
O most Gracious and merciful God, we greet you at this early hour awed by the miracle of today. Our beloved Savior loved to walk and talk with you in the early hours before the dawn. It was in these peaceful moments that he opened his heart to you, where he pondered his work and his mission. Let this be something we do as well. Let is ponder our work and mission on this Easter morning. In the empty tomb, without uttering a single word, you have proclaimed that with you all things are possible. Today you challenge us to discard our mourning clothes and be transformed among the disciples of Jesus who carry on his work. Empower us to proclaim this glorious Good News, in word and deed. Lord God, today you have swallowed up death and offered, in its place, life everlasting. In the resurrection you have not only opened wide the gates of paradise, but our eyes, to see the brightness of a new day. Our Abba Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Luke 24:1-12
The Resurrection of Jesus
But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in, they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, ‘Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’ Then they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles. But these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; then he went home, amazed at what had happened.

SERMON TEXT

The women followers of Jesus rose at early dawn to go to the tomb where they had seen Joseph of Arimathea hurriedly place the body of Jesus on Friday afternoon just before sundown. It was the day of preparation for the
Sabbath. Now keeping the day of Sabbath was a Commandment from the Lord spoken of in Exodus 16. It was no day to be trifled with. No work was to be done, which is why on the 6th day (Friday) the people prepared for it. A story is told in the book of Numbers about a man who was found gathering sticks in the wilderness on the Sabbath day, probably to build a fire. His neighbors put him to death. Talk about the letter of the Law.
It is doubtful that the women followers of Jesus spent any time grocery shopping on Friday to prepare for the Sabbath. Rules or no rules they returned to their lodgings to prepare the spices and ointments they would bring back to the tomb to anoint the dead body of Jesus properly.
The ointments and spices used to cover up the smell of decay were Balsam, myrrh, cinnamon, cassia, were used in the preparation of the holy anointing oil. Myrrh and aloes were used in ointments for burial. Myrrh was described by Matthew as one of the gifts given to the infant Jesus by the Magi. Myrrh was also used as an anesthetic and in Mark’s gospel it was in the drink that was offered to Jesus when he was crucified. Spikenard a very expensive fragrant oil used in the manufacture of perfumes and ointments.
They came to the tomb prepared to do their work. When Joseph placed Jesus in the tomb, nothing is said about him placing a stone over the opening, so there is perhaps an editorial glitch here, since the women when they arrive at the tomb find the stone rolled away from the entrance. Still with the task at hand on their minds, they enter the tomb, perhaps thinking that Joseph would be inside waiting to assist them in their work. Finding the tomb emptied of its contents, they were perplexed. Now the Greek word used in the passage is ἀπορέω – aporeho which has a bit stronger meaning than our modern day thinking about the word perplexed. To us perplexed connotes head scratching. But aporeho means: to be without resources, to be in straits, to be left wanting, to be embarrassed, to be in doubt, not to know which way to turn to be at a loss with one's self. Sounds to me more like being on the verge of panic. Their doubts and panic were interrupted by the appearance of two men, and I am pretty sure Luke wants us to remember the two men that were with Jesus on the day of his transfiguration. There he was accompanied by Moses and Elijah. I am pretty sure Luke wants us to figure these same two men have appeared to the women. Their clothes are dazzling as on the mount of transfiguration. The women were now not just panicked, they were terrified and so bowed their faces to the ground. They did that to protect themselves in case they might be looking upon the face of God. Everyone in those days knew that if you looked upon the face of God you would surely die.
The two men, asked “Why do look for the living among the dead?” He is not here, but has risen.” The two men know why they are there and who they have come looking for without the women uttering a word. At that question I wonder if the women didn’t sputter out something like: Now wait just a minute we were here on Friday when Joseph wrapped him up in the linen cloth and placed him in this very tomb. We saw it, we were witnesses to Jesus’ burial. Which then would have prompted the next remark by the two men: “Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.” Then they remembered Jesus’ words. If there is ever any doubt about the women being part of Jesus’ inner circle that doubt is abolished by these words of Luke. The women remembered what Jesus said because they heard him speak those words. In that moment they left the tomb and returned to the eleven and all the rest –that is everyone who came up from Galilee with Jesus, which could be as many as 120 persons.
The women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna the wife of Chuza, Mary the mother of James and the other women with them told the apostles and all the rest. There weren’t three women at the tomb, there were more than that. Susanna who is also mentioned by name in Luke’s gospel may have been with them, and perhaps the sisters Mary and Martha. Suffice it to say there were plenty of women who witnessed the empty tomb and the two men that only Peter James and John had seen on the Mount of Transfiguration.
So you and I on this day, along with the eleven and all the rest depend upon the account of the women witnesses to the empty tomb. Those who heard their story that day are no different from those of us who hear the story today. Today there are those who think it an idle tale, far-fetched and unbelievable like the eleven and all the rest and there are those like Peter who have been longing to hear something so extraordinary that it could cause him to get up and extricate himself from the darkness of his own thoughts and run to the tomb, stooping and looking in, to see the linen cloths by themselves and be amazed. We like Peter and the women are not only invited to be amazed. God urges us to be.
In just about every other language other than English this day is called the Pascha, which is the day of the fulfillment and realization of the Jesus’ Passion. Pascha is the transliteration of the word Pesach or Passover in Hebrew. Jesus as the Passover Lamb, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, Jesus the Pascha is risen today and urges us to rise like Peter out of our darkness of his mourning and to breathe relief and new life into our souls.
Amen.
